Introducing CCBH’s Parent Support Group and How to Join
Chicago Center for Behavioral Health is bringing parents together as a new academic year begins.
This September, CCBH will launch our Parent Support Group, a virtual community designed to help parents heal, grow, cope with, and understand the ever-changing dynamics of parenting in the modern age. Parenthood, be it to newborns or teenagers, can feel isolating. Especially in a world driven by social media — and fueled by a culture of comparion — honest conversations about parenthood and individuality can be difficult to find.
Run by a clinical therapist, CCBH’s parent support group will encourage clients to interact honestly and openly as they explore recent or prolonged challenges within the family unit. Parents of children of all ages are welcome to join the support group for community and conversation guided by their current needs.
Clinician-guided sessions will also focus on emotional regulation, parent and child autonomy, balancing discipline with support, defining household and individual goals, self-care, and conflict resolution. Group discussion points will be tailored to members’ personal experiences, and encourage conversation about cultural differences that impact each parent’s unique values.
Why group therapy? Support groups have been historically used to offer guidance and community to individuals experiencing a similar stage of life. Compared to individual therapy (which offers a one-on-one conversation about a person’s stressors,) group therapy allows a unique relational experience that validates and challenges current views, goals, and approaches. A group structure may enhance members’ confidence while pitching adjustments to their real-life approach, through both feedback from fellow members and the group’s professional.
